Psychic Education

From a very early age, children must be taught that· there is a reality within themselves, within the earth, within the universe and that himself, the earth and the universe exist only as a function of this truth and if it did not exist, he would not last, even the short time he lasts and that everything would dissolve as soon as it is created. And because that is the efficient basis of the universe, naturally it is that which will triumph, and all which contradicts that cannot be as enduring, because it is that, the eternal thing which is the basis of the universe.

The psychic being is the evolving soul of the individual, the divine portion in him which evolves from life to life, growing by its experiences until it becomes a fully conscious being. From its place behind the heart centre, the psychic being supports the mind, life and body, aiding their growth and development.

– Sri Aurobindo
  • • Searching for the psychic being in oneself
  • • Finding and uniting with it (handing over the charge of the entire being to the psychic)
  • • Growing awareness of the psychic being and its occult work and its influence on our outward life (by an inward turning of the senses)
  • • Awakening the willpower to make a persistent effort for the psychic discovery and the psychic realization or psychisization
  • • Taking utmost care that the psychic being which normally remains in front of little children is not pushed to the background with the growth of mental education
  • • A conscious and constant effort to create and keep up a psychic ambience in the school (an atmosphere vibrating with freedom, truth, love, joy, beauty, simplicity and harmony which is conducive to the growth of the psychic being)
  • • Prayers and meditations
  • • A few moments of silent concentration at the Sri Aurobindo's Sacred Relics Centre or in the Mother's Room
  • • Weekly Sri Aurobindo's study circle classes (where Sri Aurobindo and the Mother's illuminating words of wisdom are read and discussed or stories and parables depicting psychic or spiritual values are told to the children)
  • • Reading the biographies of saints and spiritual seekers
  • • Occasional spiritual discussions or talks ( on special occasions or in Darsan day celebrations)
  • • Arranging programmes of devotional songs or film- shows based on Godloving or Godrealised persons (Krishna-Sudama, Bhakta Salabega, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, etc.)
  • • Visits to Sri Aurobindo's Ashram and other centres of Sadhana giving exposure to the spiritually charged atmosphere prevailing there
  • • Trying to give spiritual orientation to all the subjects of studies (math, science, etc.) so that they all point to the omnipresent Spirit, the essential reality of our life and existence
  • • Making an invocation to the Supreme Consciousness ( or The Mother and Sri Aurobindo) before and after each class to help the teachers and the taught to bring the entire class under Its (or their) influence
